From the ancient alleys of Bari to the luxury of Borgo Egnazia and the Baroque splendour of Lecce — a complete insider's guide to Italy's most soulful region.
Last year, I finally crossed a dream off my bucket list: Puglia. The "heel" of Italy's boot is a land of sun-bleached stone, ancient olive groves, and turquoise waters. Looking back, it was a trip defined by contrasts — from the gritty, authentic charm of city backstreets to the absolute height of luxury in the countryside.
We kicked off our adventure in Bari. To truly see this city, you have to lose yourself in Bari Vecchia (the Old Town). Walking through its labyrinthine streets, we found ourselves on the famous Strada delle Orecchiette, where local grandmothers sit outside their homes, expertly hand-rolling pasta with a speed that defies the eye. It is the heartbeat of Pugliese tradition.
After visiting the majestic Basilica San Nicola, we treated ourselves to the best gelato in town at Antica Gelateria Gentile — a creamy, cold relief from the Italian sun. As the sun dipped, we had an unforgettable dinner at Mercantile Love, where the flavours of the Adriatic were served with a modern, soulful twist.
From the city, we transitioned into pure indulgence. We checked into the world-renowned Hotel Borgo Egnazia. It isn't just a hotel; it's a meticulously crafted village of white limestone. Every corner was a photo opportunity, and the service was unparalleled. We spent our day basking in the sun at Cocobay Alimini Beach Club, where the beach vibes were as high as the cocktails were refreshing.
Checking out of Borgo Egnazia was hard, but the road called. We drove through Alberobello, marvelling at the iconic conical Trulli huts, and then through the "White City" of Ostuni, which sparkles on its hilltop like a crown.
Our journey continued south to Otranto, where we stayed at the elegant Dimora San Giuseppe Hotel & Spa. Otranto has a different energy — more rugged, more historic. We spent our evening walking the fortified walls of the town before settling into a table overlooking the sea for a dinner accompanied by the sound of crashing waves.
Our final leg took us to Togo Bay Beach Club. If you love soft, sandy beaches and a vibrant atmosphere, this is the place to be. It was the perfect low-key recovery before heading into our final destination: Lecce.
In Lecce, we stayed at the breathtaking Chiostro dei Domenicani, a converted convent that exudes peace and history. Lecce is a Baroque masterpiece. We spent hours exploring its ornate churches and museums, marvelling at the intricate limestone carvings that give the city its golden glow. We ended our trip on a high note with dinner at Gimmi Restaurant, where the fine dining perfectly capped off an incredible Pugliese odyssey.
